The Importance of Seeking Professional Advice

It is really important that if you require mortgage or protection advice, you seek the advice of a professional, who is an expert in what they do.

I would like to share a case study with you regarding a business owner that I visited a couple of weeks ago. He wanted to speak with me about borrowing some additional cash to carry out some home improvements.

I believe that in order to offer the most suitable advice, it is really important to ask questions, listen and have an open discussion.

This particular business owner, runs a very successful business and had various insurance policies in place. When I asked him what they were for, he couldn’t actually remember, as he had taken them out over a few years.

The business owner has his own financial adviser which is great and so I asked him if his adviser had reviewed his protection policies.  He said he had and that everything was ok. However, It was during our conversation, that I realised that he had not received a thorough review as when I asked him if he knew that he could pay for his personal life insurance through the business and offset the cost against his corporation tax, he was not aware of this. It was clear to me that the IFA had not gone into this in detail.

It is great if you have an IFA to advise you on your pensions, investments and savings but in my experience, I commonly find that many IFA’s are not protection experts, which is something that I am.

I really understand how protection works and the best fit for you and your business and so my message to you, is that if you do see your IFA every year, really drill down and ask them about your protection and find out if they are experts. If they aren’t, that’s fine, as not everyone can be an expert in everything. If that’s the case, I am happy to speak with you and provide you with expert advice.
